Works today
We connect to Recharge and do the rest
Recharge runs most subscription boxes on Shopify: food, coffee, pet, beauty and supplements, with skips, swaps and frequencies the customer sets. We follow the next charge date Recharge holds, so a skipped order moves the reminder rather than breaking it, and from January we work out change of mind refunds less the boxes already delivered.
What works today
Connect Recharge read-only and in two minutes you see every email the new law would need for your own subscribers in the next 30 days, customer by customer: payment reminders, change of mind emails, trial endings and 12 month renewals, each with the day it must go by. Nothing is sent and nothing in Recharge is changed. It is free and needs no card.
The credential: in the Recharge merchant portal, open Apps, API tokens, press Create an API token, and set Subscriptions and Customers to Read only with everything else off. We read subscriptions and customers, check the credential with one read, store it encrypted and never show it again. You can delete it in Recharge at any time.
Sending opens from 1 January 2027. From then the same connection sends every email on time in your branding, runs the one step cancel page, works out change of mind refunds for you to approve, and keeps the record. Connect Recharge now or check your sign-up page first.
Who uses Recharge for subscriptions
Brands selling physical goods on repeat: coffee, meal kits, pet food, supplements, razors and beauty. Most are food or things that get used up, so on a change of mind refund you keep the goods already delivered plus their standard delivery.
What the connection does from 1 January
- Reads your plans and prices from Recharge. You confirm each one: what kind of product it is, whether the law covers it, and how much notice you promise customers before a payment.
- Reads every customer and subscription, with its start date, trial end, next charge date and status, so we can work out which emails are due and when. This part runs today.
- Keeps up with changes in Recharge every night: a new subscription, a changed price, a pause, a cancellation. Each change updates that customer's emails.
- Writes two things back, and nothing else: a cancellation when a customer uses the cancel page, and a refund once you have approved it. Prices, products and customers are never changed.
Questions
- Customers skip and swap all the time. Does that break the reminders?
- No. The reminder attaches to the next charge date Recharge holds. When it moves, the reminder moves.
- Will the Shopify customer portal count as a one step cancel?
- Only if cancelling takes one clear step with at most one offer to stay and no survey in the way, and a written confirmation follows. We give you a cancel page that meets those conditions and can be linked from the portal.
- What about Shopify Subscriptions without Recharge?
- Shopify's own subscriptions are a separate connection and not yet one we read. Tell us if you use it.
- Do one-off purchases on the same store matter?
- No. Only subscriptions that renew or charge again unless cancelled are covered.
This page explains the law in plain English. It is not legal advice. The detailed rules are still being finalised by the government.
