Subscription Law

Works today

We connect to Stripe and do the rest

Stripe takes the payments and runs the renewals. It does not send the reminder emails the new UK law requires, it does not tell customers they have 14 days to change their mind, and its customer portal is not a one step cancel page. We connect to your Stripe account, read what it already knows about your customers, and do all of that for you.

What works today

Connect Stripe read-only and in two minutes you see every email the new law would need for your own subscribers in the next 30 days, customer by customer: payment reminders, change of mind emails, trial endings and 12 month renewals, each with the day it must go by. Nothing is sent and nothing in Stripe is changed. It is free and needs no card.

The credential: in Stripe, open Developers, then API keys, press Create restricted key, and set Customers, Subscriptions, Products and Prices to Read with everything else None. A full secret key is refused. We read products, prices, customers and subscriptions, check the credential with one read, store it encrypted and never show it again. You can delete it in Stripe at any time.

Sending opens from 1 January 2027. From then the same connection sends every email on time in your branding, runs the one step cancel page, works out change of mind refunds for you to approve, and keeps the record. Connect Stripe now or check your sign-up page first.

What we read

  • Your products and prices. Each becomes a plan once you confirm what kind of product it is, whether the law covers it, and how much notice you promise customers before a payment.
  • Your customers, including their billing country. The law covers customers in the UK, and Subscription Law decides by billing country, never by where they happen to be browsing.
  • Each subscription: when it started, the trial end, the next charge date, whether it is set to cancel, and its status. These are the dates every email is worked out from.

What the connection does from 1 January

  • Reads your plans and prices from Stripe. You confirm each one: what kind of product it is, whether the law covers it, and how much notice you promise customers before a payment.
  • Reads every customer and subscription, with its start date, trial end, next charge date and status, so we can work out which emails are due and when. This part runs today.
  • Keeps up with changes in Stripe every night: a new subscription, a changed price, a pause, a cancellation. Each change updates that customer's emails.
  • Writes two things back, and nothing else: a cancellation when a customer uses the cancel page, and a refund once you have approved it. Prices, products and customers are never changed.

Cancellations made in Stripe or by your team

A customer who cancels through the Stripe customer portal, or whose subscription your team cancels in the Stripe dashboard, still has to get a written confirmation. We treat the portal as online (24 hours) and a dashboard cancellation as any other way (end of the third working day), and send the confirmation either way.

The portal is not a one step cancel page on its own. It sits behind a login, it is not linked from the emails, and it sends no confirmation. We give you a cancel page reached by a secure link from every reminder and from your account page.

Try it on a test account first

A restricted key from a Stripe test account works the same way. Stripe test clocks let you move a test subscription through a trial, a renewal and a cancellation in minutes and watch the emails appear on the dashboard.

How a Stripe price becomes a plan

Stripe price: £29.99, monthly, 14 day trial. You confirm: a membership (access service), covered by the law, 14 days notice before each payment, no notice period to cancel.

From that, a member who joins on 15 January 2027 gets a change of mind email on 15 January, an email from 15 January about the first payment on 29 January, a second change of mind email on 29 January, and payment reminders every six months from 15 July.

Questions

Does Subscription Law change anything in my Stripe account?
Not today: the connection is read-only and a restricted key makes that a rule Stripe enforces. From 1 January it writes cancellations from the cancel page and refunds you have approved, nothing else.
Why is a secret key refused?
A secret key can change and charge anything. A restricted key with Read on four things can only look. We only take the second kind.
What about the wording on Stripe Checkout?
We write a short line for Stripe Checkout with the key facts the law requires, and a full page per plan on your own web address to link from checkout.
Do I need Stripe Billing or will plain Stripe subscriptions do?
Any Stripe account with recurring prices and subscriptions works.

This page explains the law in plain English. It is not legal advice. The detailed rules are still being finalised by the government.
